Northern Ballet's most powerful heroine returns to the stage in 2014

Northern Ballet launches its spring 2014 tour with the return of one of the most infamous women in history. Cleopatra is back in a season of stunning ballet that also includes performances of the Company’s new production, Cinderella, and the continued revival of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Cleopatra will visit Leeds Grand Theatre (6-15 Mar) and Sheffield Lyceum Theatre (25-29 Mar). Choreographed by Northern Ballet Artistic Director, David Nixon OBE, to an original score by Claude-Michel Schönberg, (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon), the ballet opened in 2011 and toured extensively throughout the UK to great audience and critical acclaim. It focuses on Cleopatra at the time of her passionate love affairs with Marc Antony and Julius Caesar.

Nixon explains: ‘I have been fascinated by the story of Cleopatra for a long time. There is little factual information about her yet she managed to hold in her grasp two of the most powerful men in history. She was in some ways beautiful and unbelievably sensual for the almost barbaric Romans but she was also a woman, mother and above all a queen.’

Northern Ballet will also perform Cinderella at Hull New Theatre (2-5 Apr) and Cardiff (8-12 Apr). The new family ballet, which will première in Leeds this Christmas (16 Dec 2013-4 Jan 2014), is set in Imperial Russia to a new score by Philip Feeney. In Nixon’s version, devastated by the loss of her father and excluded by her cruel step mother and spoilt sisters, Cinderella finds solace on the frozen lake. When she meets her Prince Charming and experiences a magical encounter in a market place Cinderella’s destiny changes forever.

Cinderella is the fifth addition to Northern Ballet’s repertoire of highly successful family ballets which already includes The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, A Christmas Carol and Beauty & the Beast.

Olivier-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed at Edinburgh Festival Theatre (20-22 Mar), Norwich Theatre Royal (13-17 May), Milton Keynes Theatre (20-24 May) and Southampton Mayflower Theatre (28-31 May).

David Nixon’s ballet adaptation of the Shakespeare play sees the romantic antics of a touring dance company played out as it travels by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh. His choreography brings out the comedy, romance and complexity of this enchanting story. His Dior-inspired costumes, along with stylish black and white sets provide a dazzling contrast to the glorious technicolour of the dreamworld. The ballet is performed to music by Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms, arranged by John Longstaff and performed live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

In addition to our large-scale tour sits Three Little Pigs which will be performed in 21 venues around the UK during spring.  The second production in Northern Ballet’s series of Short Ballets for Small People, Three Little Pigs has been created to introduce families and young children to live dance, music and theatre. It follows the sell-out success of Ugly Duckling which toured to over twenty venues and delighted audiences and critics. Choreographed by Northern Ballet dancers Hannah Bateman and Victoria Sibson, Three Little Pigs tells the famous story of how the pigs overcome the Big Bad Wolf in a colourful, funny and entertaining 40 minute performance. Tickets are priced at just £4 and £5. Venues and performance details will be confirmed shortly.
