Northern Ballet generates over £500,000 in financial support
In the past month Northern Ballet has generated over £500,000 of financial support from private donors, companies, trusts and foundations: an encouraging and impressive start to a campaign that sees the Company fundraising to fill a substantial gap in its government funding.
The Company has garnered much recognition since the move to its new home in Leeds, which recently reached the finals in the Best Arts Project category for the National Lottery Awards 2011, after a hugely successful public voting campaign. Northern Ballet's recent national tour of Cleopatrahas also won the Company wide acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
The individuals, companies, trusts and foundations who have pledged their support to the Company include the Sir Siegmund Warburg's Voluntary Settlement, The Monument Trust, The Foyle Foundation, The Emerald Foundation and Leeds Community Foundation: HESCO Bastion Fund. Their donations will be used towards the creation of new productions, including Northern Ballet's Christmas production of Beauty & the Beast, as well as enabling the Company to retain dancers and develop the operational capacity of its new home on Quarry Hill in Leeds.
Northern Ballet received a 15% cut to its core funding for 2012 to 2015, when Arts Council England (ACE) announced cuts in March of this year.
Consequently, fundraising targets have been considerably increased to ensure that Northern Ballet can continue to operate at its consistently high level. The Company's recent fundraising success is a step in the right direction reducing the overall target to a further £1m of new funding over the next three years.
Chief Executive, Mark Skipper, says:
'We are delighted with the donations and pledges we have received recently and extend heartfelt thanks to those who have supported us. It is a tremendously encouraging first step towards reaching our overall goal and a promising reflection of the great belief in and passion for Northern Ballet.
'Nonetheless, we are still very actively seeking support and continue to be proactive in supplementing our funding and encourage anyone who is interested in securing the future of the Company to contact us.
'In order to ensure we can maintain a full compliment of dancers and continue to commission the new productions for which we have an unrivalled reputation, private investment is now of paramount importance. The onus is on us to focus our energies on encouraging donations and articulating the importance and benefits of ensuring that Northern Ballet remains a valued and influential member of the arts community.'
