START 2012 is nearly at an end

Published on Monday 10 December, 2012

We've had another wonderful START project this term where we have worked with seventeen schools from all over West Yorkshire.

Leanne Kirkham & participants of the START project

The students all participated in two dance workshops and have been to the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford to watch Northern Ballet’s Beauty & the Beast. As a final treat, all students involved in the project will be attending a special performance of The Nutcracker next Thursday at Leeds Grand Theatre.

Martha Leebolt as Beauty as she sleeps in a rose...

The first workshops were based on Beauty & the Beast where they learned some of the dace from the ballet performed by the selfish Prince Orion. They then discovered their own ‘inner Beast’ and created some wonderful duets and solos. The students enjoyed spotting the dance performed on the stage which they had tried. They also told us how much they loved the sets and costumes, especially the part where Beauty sleeps in the giant white rose.

The second workshop focused on The Nutcracker which opens next week at Leeds Grand Theatre. Students were able to brush up on their ballet technique skills and develop their creativity further by learning parts of the ballet and by creating and performing their own duets and trios.

The students and staff are in for a real treat, the company dancers and staff are working really hard in the studios to make sure that this year's performance of The Nutcracker is the best yet!
