Meet Rose

Published on Wednesday 25 September, 2013

My name is Rose Chadwick and I have recently started my post as Dance Education Officer as maternity cover for Sophie Alder.

I've been fortunate enough to have worked with Northern Ballet's Learning team as a freelance dance artist for a number of years and I’m really excited about working with the team and the Company full-time.

I first worked with Northern Ballet in 2007, assisting Sophie Alder and Sharon Watson [Sharon's now the Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre - Ed] on the Gallery 37+ project in Leeds. I gave up my summer break from training at NSCD to volunteer for a supporting role on the project and enjoyed every minute.

The following year I was offered another supporting role working on an Olympic themed dance project in Calderdale, and in 2009 was asked to support Sophie with the Barnsley project Flourish, we worked with five schools in the area to put together an outdoor dance piece that was performed at the summer carnival.

Since 2010 I have been supporting the Learning team with their annual easter and summer courses, as well as delivering a number of START workshops in Leeds, Bradford, Dewsbury and Sheffield. I’ve also travelled a little further afield to deliver the Over 55s workshops in Norwich and Canterbury.

In September 2012 the Learning team launched Ability, their new dance course for adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities. I was thrilled to be asked to support Sophie each week on the course, working with and supporting our regular participants Paul, Emily and Louise. Last Friday was the start of the second year and the autumn term for Ability, Louise and Emily have returned and we also have our new participant Tessa, with support from the lovely Mia!

My first few weeks have been really eventful. I’ve worked with 30 fab kids on the summer course, a number of families and staff from the Martin House Hospice and a small group of older people living with early stage dementia. We’ve also been to Meanwood Valley Urban Farm for our Three Little Pigs family fun day, and last week I delivered our first Pigs workshops for the lovely little dancers at the Hunslet Club.

There are so many great projects coming up, it’s going to be a very busy autumn but I’m really looking forward to it!
