Aspiring young dance stars of the future will be preparing for life as a professional dancer by attending Northern Ballet’s Summer School between 1 and 13 August. The Summer School has attracted talent from across the world with students from six different counties, including places as far afield as Japan and Brazil, attending to experience Northern Ballet’s unique training programme.

The Summer School offers intensive dance training for 16 19 year olds under the leadership of Northern Ballet’s internationally acclaimed ballet mistress, Yoko Ichino. Students will attend workshops in ballet, contemporary dance, body conditioning and a drama workshop led by Northern Ballet Associate and drama specialist Patricia Doyle. The summer school offers a unique insight into professional dance with talks from dancers and chance to observe the Company’s rehearsals.

Dancers will be following the Ichino method, developed by Yoko Ichino, which helps dancers understand their own bodies. Yoko says: “The Summer School allows students to get a glimpse of what the real life of a dancer is like, in the home of a professional company. Students will follow the same unique blend of training as our professional dancers, including use of the Ichino Method. We are also one of the only dance schools to offer drama workshops, we feel it is essential that dancers develop drama skills as dance is not only about movement but also using your body to tell a story.”

Emma Puumala, a summer school student from Canada said: “I have loved dancing at the Northern Ballet Academy Summer School. It has been a wonderful experience learning new methods of dance and I know that the things I have learnt here will help me throughout my career.”

Isadora Souza, a student from Brazil, said: “It has been a great experience, with different people and teachers and new ideas to help my technique. I’m returning to Brazil having learnt a lot.”

Hannah Kirkpatrick, Northern Ballet Academy Manager, says: "The Summer School offers students a real insight into company life. Many students who attend our Summer School will return in the future to dance for us professionally, five of our current company dancers have in the past attended the Summer School.”
