Northern Ballet stands out amongst other dance companies for its record of continuously commissioning new narrative work in dance. Most recently they have commissioned Jonathan Watkins to create 1984, Cathy Marston for Jane Eyre and now, former Northern Ballet dancer and Choreographic Lab alumnus Kenneth Tindall will create the Company’s new ballet for 2017 – Casanova.
The Lab is a unique commitment to nurturing emerging choreographers and developing talent. Working with Lab Partner, The Royal Ballet, and following a nationwide callout, five young choreographers with varying levels of experience were selected for the three week intensive including studio time with the dancers of Northern Ballet, a programme of talks and mentoring.
The Lab, now in its second year, was initiated by David Nixon, creator of numerous narrative works and is curated by director and producer Jane Hackett. Mentors and advisors include Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, dramaturg Ruth Little and playwright Greg Mosse.
