Matthew Topliss

Matthew was born in Boston, Lincolnshire but has lived in Yorkshire for the past 11 years. He is a graduate of Northern Ballet Academy CAT scheme and continued his training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He joined Northern Ballet in 2012.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Boston, Lincolnshire. I spent most of my childhood in Grimsby but have lived in West Yorkshire for about 10 years.

Where did you do your dance training?

I trained on the Associate Course at Northern Ballet whilst also training at NSCD (Northern School of Contemporary Dance) in Leeds, but then joined the CAT scheme at Northern ~Ballet a year after. I have just graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (in partnership with Scottish Ballet)

When did you join Northern Ballet?

I joined Northern Ballet July 2012.

What made you want to be a dancer?

I wanted to be a dancer after watching several dance companies at the theatre when I was a kid.

What would be your dream role to dance and why?

My dream role would be to perform the role of Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet because I find the character is quiet witty and a little cheeky which I can associate with!

Who are your artistic influences or heroes?

One of my artistic influences would obviously be David Nixon because he is so passionate about his work. Not only is he a great choreographer, but he is fantastic at being able to draw the audience deep into the story that is being told in a performance.

Another artistic influence would be Ashley Page (former artistic director of Scottish Ballet) his choreography is tricky, quick and precise but brings a style to dancing which is entirely his own.

Describe your perfect Sunday morning

My perfect Sunday morning would be to stay in bed having a cup of coffee and a bacon butty!

What was the first album you bought and what was the last album you bought?

The first ever album I bought was Nickleback, All the Right Reasons, and the last album I bought was Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto.

What would be your luxury item on a desert island?

My guitar.

What are your favourite places in Yorkshire?

My favourite places are HMV, Burtons, Leeds Grand Theatre, Alhambra Theatre Bradford, TGI Fridays and Nandos!
