Harvey Pratt, aged 10, gives us his review of Northern Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the Grand Theatre, Leeds. Harvey is a first year student on Northern Ballet Academy’s professional training programme.
‘When I got to the theatre I felt really excited but nervous at the same time, it was the first time I have come to see Northern Ballet perform and been to The Grand Theatre.
Me and my dance teacher Ian Rodley from DAZL (Dance Action Zone Leeds) knew it would be amazing because Hannah Kirkpatrick (Northern Ballet Academy Manager) had told us how ace the dancers were. Everyone was dressed up suits and dresses and it was really busy. When we went into the theatre I looked around at the stage and wished I could be one of the dancers.
When I was watching I liked the fact I could understand the story. Even though they were not talking, I understood everything from the movement the dancers were making. I liked the Sugar Plum Fairy the best because she had the hardest dance with lots of turns; I thought she was the best dancer. Ian asked me which character would I like to play. I said I would like to be the prince because I love how he leaps around the stage, it was amazing.
I would definitely tell other people about the performance and tell them to go watch Northern Ballet. None of my friends or family has ever seen a ballet before, and I think they would love it. I will definitely go see Northern Ballet again and I can’t wait to start the Centre for Advance Training Programme at Northern Ballet Academy. I know it will be hard but I will try my hardest because I want to be on the stage performing as the best ballet dancer in the world one day.
Thank you Hannah for inviting me!
