Duncan Hayler

Duncan has designed sets for three Northern Ballet productions: David Nixon CBE’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Beauty & the Beast and Cinderella.

His previous engagements include: State Opera Berlin; Royal Opera House Covent Garden; Wielki Opera Warsaw; State Opera Prague; State Theatre Munich; Polish State Opera; Deutsche Opera Berlin; The Ring tour to Tokyo, Yokohama, Kennedy Centre Washington DC and Royal Opera London; Krakow Opera; Vienna Chamber Opera; Berlin Chamber Opera; Musikwerkstatt Vienna; Friedrichstadtpalast Berlin; Vienna Volksoper; VBW Raimund Theatre Vienna (musical Romeo und Julia); Poznan Opera; Derby Playhouse; BEMUS Festival Belgrade; Hamburg Opera Group; Opera North; Theater Gera and Altenburg; Nantes Opera; Nancy Opera; State Opera Luxembourg; Bregenz Festival; Opera Sao Carlos Lisbon; Garsington Opera; State Theater Bielefeld; Saatstheater Schwerin; and Staatsoper Stuttgart.

Duncan has worked with Rudolf Nureyev, David Pountney, Nicola Raab, David Freeman, Gotz Friedrich, Craig Revel Horwood, Kay Kuntze, Ansgar Weigner, Waut Koeken, Steven Edwards, Emmanuelle Bastet , Frank Hilbrich and Henry Akina.

He has designed numerous world premières from composers including: H. Gorecki's Muzyka Staroploska (Warsaw Wielki Opera); C.Rene Hirschfeld's Wunschpunsch; Isidora Zebeljan's Marathon Familie (Bregenz Festival); the internationally acclaimed world première of William Ward Murta’s musical The Birds of Alfred Hitchcock, Theater Bielefeld; and the opera Peter Pan by Richard Ayres, Staatsoper Stuttgart.

Production designs also include the musical Chess for Theater Bielefeld, Theater Gera and Altenburg; Lucia di Lammermoor for State Theater Bern; La Verita in Cimento Garsington; Rondine for Theater San Carlos Lisbon; My Fair Lady, Luzern; Sweeney Todd, Magdeburg; ScharlatanLady Macbeth of MzenskToi cest MoiRubezahlRigoletto, and the musicals Chitty Chitty Bang Bang! and Jekyll and Hyde Gera, Altenburg and Schwerin (set design nominated for the Weltenbauer prize Berlin). Most recently set and costume designs for: The Tales of Hoffmann and for the rarely perfomed critically acclaimed prize winning production of George Enescu's opera Oedipe for Opera Gera and Altenburg.
