Charles has worked in the UK and internationally designing opera, ballet, drama, musicals and pantomime. He designed the European premières of Sondheim’s Follies and Pacific Overtures.

Internationally Charles has designed ballets and operas including: Giselle (English National Ballet); Romeo & JulietThe NutcrackerCavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Estonia); Romeo and Juliet (Indianapolis Ballet International); Nabucco, AidaDon CarlosThe Wall (Rock Ballet)OtelloDer RosencavalierCavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Germany); Il Trovatore (Hong Kong Opera); Spartacus (Hong Kong Ballet); Casse–Noisette (Ballet du Capitole, France).

Charles was honoured to have his costumes for Alice in Wonderland exhibited at the National Centre of Costume and Scenography in France.

Charles has designed for Northern Ballet’s productions of The Nutcracker and The Three Musketeers.

Recent productions include: Chicago (Pitlochry); Dracula (West Australian Ballet); forthcoming Nutcracker (Germany); Priscilla Queen of the Desert (UK National Tour).

He was the recipient of the Theatre Management Association Award for Best Designer in 1993 and the Evening News Award for Best Designer in 1986.
