Set Designer

Charles has worked in the UK and internationally designing opera, ballet, drama, musicals and pantomime. He designed the European Premières of Sondheim’s Follies and Pacific Overtures.

Internationally Charles has designed ballets and operas including: Giselle (English National Ballet); Romeo & Juliet, The Nutcracker, Cavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Estonia); Romeo and Juliet (Indianapolis Ballet International); Nabucco, Aida, Don Carlos, The Wall (Rock Ballet), Otello, Der Rosencavalier and Cavelleria Rusticana/Pagliacci (Germany); Il Trovatore (Hong Kong Opera); Spartacus ((chor. Irek Mukhamedov) Hong Kong Ballet) and Casse–Noisette (Ballet du Capitole, France).

Charles has designed for Northern Ballet’s productions of The Nutcracker and The Three Musketeers. The designs were repeated in Slovenia, Estonia and Alberta Ballet Canada.

Recent productions: Co-design with Phil R Daniels in Germany: Hello Dolly; Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown; Rigoletto, Carousel; Pinocchio; 39 steps; West Side Story; La Cage Aux Folles; A Waltzdream (Austria); Raymonda (Estonia); Alice in Wonderland (Ballet du Capitole, France); Spamalot (Tour in Germany and Switzerland); Glass Menagerie; Cider with Rosie and Cinderella (Cheltenham Everyman Theatre).

Forthcoming Productions: Kiss Me Kate; Rocky Horror Show (Germany) and The Nutcracker (West Australian Ballet).

He was awarded twice for his designs in the UK, most notably the Theatre Management of Great Britain, ‘Best Designer’ in 1993 and the Evening News Award ‘Best Designer’ 1986.

He has also exhibited his paintings in the Dragooni Galeri, Estonia, the Royal Academy, London and in many galleries in the UK.
