The START project enables young people, who wouldn't normally have the opportunity to access the arts, to take part in dance activities and to visit local theatres.
Providing pupils with the chance to take part in arts activities and become familiar with their local arts venues and learn through cross-curricular activities, START has been hailed as 'an amazing, enlightening experience not to be missed' (Castleton Primary School).
The project is aimed at pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds who do not usually experience the arts, many of whom will never have been to a theatre before. Through dance activities in school and supporting work in the classroom, pupils are introduced to dance and the theatre in a non-threatening environment, allowing them to access a new experience with confidence and understanding.
Additional outcomes of the project have seen pupils' communication, writing and vocabulary skills develop as their interest in dance increases throughout the project.
The project involves dance workshops in school and visits to local theatres to see Northern Ballet productions. A teacher inset session and resource packs ensure the longevity of the work after the project has ended.
