Vacancy: Costume Maker & Cutter (1 year fixed term)

We are looking for a Fixed Term Maternity Cover, Costume Maker & Cutter to assist in the efficient operation of Northern Ballet’s Wardrobe Department, to the highest possible standards. You will have exceptional interpersonal skills and proven Workroom experience at a similar level.

  • Salary: £28,400
  • Hours: Fixed Term 1 year Maternity Cover.

Responsibilities

  • Cutting and making of costumes for Northern Ballet’s new and existing repertoire.
  • Supervising and mentoring Northern Ballet wardrobe staff and freelance makers within the workroom in the construction of costumes, alterations and refurbishment.
  • Organisation and facilitation of fittings for all upcoming productions
  • Upkeep of the workroom equipment and machinery (irons, sewing machines and overlockers both domestic and industrial)
  • Where applicable, documentation of alterations made to hired costumes so all items can be returned to their original condition on return to origin.
  • Working closely with Northern Ballet staff, Designers, Directors, and Costume Supervisors etc in a professional, collaborative way.
  • Assisting in the general maintenance of costumes, shoes and accessories (washing, ironing mending and refurbishment) at base.
  • Assisting with the packing and unpacking of shows in and out of Quarry Hill, of all costumes, accessories, headdresses, footwear and miscellaneous wardrobe equipment
  • Assisting at theatre venues on tech weeks of new productions and revivals, and to be available as cover for Northern Ballet Staff out on tour if required.
  • To be flexible and work as part of a team is an essential requirement of this post.
  • General upkeep of the appearance of the workroom and general working environment

Experience we'd like to see in your CV or cover letter

  • Proven experience in a professional wardrobe workroom, as a cutter and maker, supervising and mentoring others.
  • A strong general knowledge of various sewing techniques
  • Great interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in dance or ballet would be preferable
