Anne Lister
Ambitious, assertive Yorkshire woman who does as she wants. In public, she battles businessman Charles Rawson to control the coal mines fuelling England’s growing industries. In private, she desires women—a desire she acts on and then details in her coded diary. Her greatest love is Mariana, but when Mariana chooses convention and marries a man, Lister turns her attention to Ann Walker, who ultimately becomes her wife.
Mariana Lawton
The friend and lover who breaks Anne’s heart by marrying Charles Lawton. Anne and Mariana reconcile, hoping the aged Lawton will die and, as a widow, Mariana can live by Anne’s side. But Lawton endures, and Mariana must survive Anne choosing the younger Ann Walker.
Ann Walker
A survivor of multiple family tragedies, Ann Walker is a young heiress whose family treats her as a most fragile flower. Much to her family’s dismay, meeting the boisterous, adventurous Anne Lister sets Ann on a path to being a different type of woman.
Christopher Rawson
Anne’s nemesis and Ann Walker’s uncle, self-assured, accustomed to winning, and incapable of imagining anyone could best him—especially not a woman.
James and Anne Lister
Elder members of Anne’s family who accept and love her, even as they become aware of their niece’s proclivity to break all rules. They make Shibden Hall, where they live with Anne and her sister, a loving refuge for Anne. James’s unusual choice to have Anne inherit Shibden transforms her into a rare entity: a female landowner.
Marian Lister
Anne Lister’s sister who wishes Anne could be more conventional but can’t stand up to her domineering older sister.
Charles Lawton
Marianna’s elderly husband. Despite his years, he is sharp and jealous of Anne Lister’s hold on his wife.
Chorus of Words
Anne’s words and her code are represented through a chorus of dancers, they join Anne when she is deep in thought writing her now infamous journals.
