A child is wearing part of the costume for a Children's Ballet to feel closer to the action

We're taking audio description for children on tour!

Our audio described performances bring the magic of ballet to life for those with visual impairments.

While available at most theatres across our national tour, we're excited to announce that this year a selected number of theatres on our children’s ballets tour will have audio description available.

Thanks to the support of The Spectacle Maker’s Charity and The Powell Family Foundation audio description will be available for Hansel & Gretel in Leeds, London and Huddersfield, helping even more children experience the wonder and join in the fun. Audio description for children’s ballets was introduced at last year’s performances of Tortoise & the Hare at our own Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds, and after its success, we’ve brought it back on a larger scale.

Written by former Northern Ballet Premier Dancer Pippa Moore MBE, audience members will hear descriptions of the mesmerising movement, captivating characters and heart-warming story alongside the production’s sprightly live music. Children and their adults are also encouraged to participate in a free Touch Tour Insight Workshop taking place before the performance. In these workshops, children will be introduced to the production, hear descriptions of the scenery and be able to touch costumes and props – helping them to gain a better understanding of the show before the performance.

Hansel & Gretel

In this reimagined version of Hansel & Gretel, the siblings take a walk through the woods, unaware of the damage they leave behind. But when they get lost, they meet a host of spirited friends who teach them how we can all look after the planet better - and have some fun along the way!
