Gwénäelle Poline Santos


Gwénäelle was born in Vienna and grew up in France. She trained at Académie Chaptal in Paris and the National Ballet School of Marseille. Her previous companies include Ballet Carmen Roche, Tulsa Ballet, Corella Ballet and Ballet du Capitole. She was with Northern Ballet from July 2014 until June 2015.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Vienna, Austria and moved to France when I was four years-old where I grew up in a suburb of Paris. 

At what age did you start dancing?

10 years old.

Where did you train?

I first trained at Académie Chaptal in Paris and then I entered the National Ballet School of Marseille when I was 14 years old.

Ballet Carmen Roche (Madrid, Spain), Tulsa Ballet (Oklahoma, USA), Corella Ballet (Segovia and Barcelona, Spain) and Ballet du Capitole (Toulouse, France). 

Career highlights

Performing in the Festival Ballet of Calí in 2009 and dancing George Ballanchine’s Who Cares? with Angel Corella as my partner in Andorra in 2013.

What do you like most about being a dancer?

To have the opportunity to express myself through dance and also to travel, meet new people from different countries and learn new languages.

What is your favourite book?

I love to read so it’s really hard to choose just one! I’d have to say The Ladies’ Paradise by E. Zola.

What is your favourite post-show meal?

A good plate of pasta, easy to cook and always good even if you don’t have anything in the fridge!

How do you like to relax?

Cooking a meal with my husband, reading a good book and listening to music.

If you weren’t a dancer what would you be?

I’m very interested in international politics to maybe I would work in an embassy or consulate.
