Join us for the launch of a series celebrating new ballet – an eclectic selection of pieces choreographed by Northern Ballet’s own dancers and premièred by fellow members of the Company.
Sketches is a new series that invites choreographers at different stages of their careers to experiment with movement, ideas and storytelling. Devised by Federico Bonelli, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director, Sketches is dedicated to nurturing new talent in dance – and presenting their creations to audiences for the first time.
Six Northern Ballet dancer–choreographers are being mentored at creative workshops by three established choreographers: Mthuthuzeli November, choreographer of Wailers and the Olivier Award-winning Ingoma; Kenneth Tindall, Northern Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence; and Sharon Watson MBE DL, CEO and Principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Each of these emerging choreographers will be on hand to introduce their new work – alongside a new piece by award-winning Leeds-based choreographer Jamaal Burkmar. Don’t miss this glimpse into the future of ballet.
One of the pieces in Sketches contains themes of male depression and suicide. Another piece contains strobe lighting effects.

Harris Beattie , Junior Soloist
Harris trained at Danscentre in Aberdeen and Central School of Ballet, graduating in 2018 with BA (Hons) in Professional Dance and Performance. He joined Northern Ballet in 2018.

Katharine is Korean American and graduated from English National Ballet School after studying at The Washington School of Ballet.

George Liang , Dancer
George is from Taipei in Taiwan and trained with the New Zealand School of Dance, Canada’s National Ballet School, and I Shin Dance Studio. He joined Northern Ballet in 2018.

Gavin McCaig , Former Dancer
Gavin is from Motherwell and moved to Glasgow at the age of 12 to start his vocational training at The Dance School of Scotland. Gavin joined Northern Ballet in 2014.

Bruno is from Barcelona, Spain and started dancing at Escola de Dansa Marisa Yudes in Barcelona at the age of eight. He joined Northern Ballet in 2020.
